The Unsung Hero Behind India's Physics Revolution
For generations of Indian students, the name H.C. Verma has been synonymous with success in physics. His iconic book, “Concepts of Physics,” has guided countless aspiring engineers and doctors through the intricacies of this complex subject. Yet, few are aware of the inspiring story behind this renowned textbook.
A Brilliant Mind, a Noble Mission
Born in Darbhanga, Bihar, Verma grew up in an educationally-oriented family. His early fascination with science led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Physics from IIT Kanpur. It was during his teaching stint at Patna Science College that he encountered a problem: the internationally acclaimed physics textbook, Resnick and Halliday, while excellent, failed to resonate with Indian students.
What many people don't realize is that the issue wasn't the students' lack of intelligence, but rather the textbook's inability to connect with their unique cultural and educational backgrounds. Verma recognized this gap and decided to bridge it.
Creating a Textbook for India
Instead of complaining about the lack of suitable resources, Verma took matters into his own hands. Drawing from his extensive teaching experience, he understood the common misconceptions and confusion points of Indian students. He crafted “Concepts of Physics” from scratch, using simple language, real-life examples, and carefully designed illustrations.
The book encouraged students to question “why” before learning “how,” a fundamental shift from the traditional formula-focused approach. This innovative teaching method resonated with students, and the book soon became a staple for JEE and NEET aspirants.
A Professor's Legacy
Verma's impact didn't stop at his textbook. As a faculty member at IIT Kanpur, he continued to make significant contributions to experimental nuclear physics, publishing numerous research papers. However, his passion for making physics accessible to all never wavered.
He developed over 600 low-cost physics experiments using everyday materials, ensuring that even schools with limited resources could provide an engaging physics education. This initiative, known as the National Anveshika Network of India (NANI), has since supported learning centers across the country, making physics more enjoyable and interactive.
A Life Dedicated to Education
Even after retirement, Verma remained deeply involved in education. He co-founded Shiksha Sopan, an initiative that provides academic support to children from economically weaker families. His belief that quality education should reach those who need it most has benefited hundreds of students and their families.
In 2021, the Government of India recognized Verma's immense contributions by awarding him the Padma Shri. However, as he himself might say, his true reward is seeing the impact his work has had on the lives of millions of students.
