The Owensboro Museum of Fine Art is set to showcase the captivating artwork of Carlos Gamez De Francisco, a Cuban American artist whose work blends technical prowess with a unique sense of humor and imagination. This exhibition, opening on July 25, 2026, promises to be a delightful exploration of Gamez De Francisco's artistic vision, offering a rare glimpse into his world of detailed figures, layered backgrounds, and imaginative animal-human subject matter.
Gamez De Francisco's journey began in Holguín, Cuba, in 1987, where he was exposed to a rich cultural heritage. His training in an academic style, heavily influenced by the Russian Academy, has shaped his distinctive artistic approach. The artist's paintings are characterized by their intricate details, richly layered backgrounds, and imaginative use of animals alongside human subjects, creating a captivating visual narrative. His photography, on the other hand, transforms everyday household objects into compositions inspired by royalty, adding a layer of sophistication to his artistic repertoire.
This exhibition marks a significant moment for the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art, as it showcases Gamez De Francisco's work for the second time. His previous exhibition in 2022, as part of Artfull Connections, featured artists from Owensboro and Louisville, and since then, his work has gained international recognition. The artist's pieces are now included in the collections of museums in Cuba, Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, and Indiana, including the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art itself.
Executive Director Jason Hayden highlights the unique blend of technical excellence and imaginative storytelling in Gamez De Francisco's work. He states, 'Carlos’ work combines both technical mastery of his medium, superb design, exquisite use of color and texture as well as surprising wit, humor, and whimsy.' Gamez De Francisco's ability to use ordinary people and objects in combinations that recall earlier epochs while maintaining a modern artistic identity is truly remarkable. His subjects retain their dignity while remaining relatable, making his work accessible and engaging to a wide audience.
The exhibition will remain on display until October 18, 2026, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in Gamez De Francisco's artistic world. Admission to the exhibition and museum is free, and the museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. on weekends. This exhibition is a testament to the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art's commitment to showcasing diverse and captivating artistic talents, providing a platform for artists like Gamez De Francisco to share their unique perspectives with the world.
